BEAST: A Battery Simulation Tool

Overview

BEAST is a flexible, physics-based simulation tool designed to model the electrical and thermal behavior of battery systems. It was developed to be easily expandable, allowing new cell models to be integrated as they become available.

The framework supports both component-level and system-level analysis, enabling accurate performance prediction across a wide range of operating conditions.

Key Features

  • Modular architecture to integrate new electrochemical and thermal cell models.
  • Electrical resistance modeling for wiring and harness effects.
  • End-of-life simulation for capacity fade, resistance growth, and degraded-string removal.
  • Radiative heat transfer for cooling to space and external heating inputs.
  • Thermal control logic to keep battery systems in a target temperature window.
  • Custom cycling profiles for mission-specific charge and discharge behavior.
  • Interactive plotting with zoom, pan, and data-picker support.
  • Export support for standard analysis formats including CSV and Excel.

Value

BEAST provides a robust framework for exploring battery behavior under realistic operating scenarios, from routine cycling to end-of-life degradation. Its flexibility makes it well-suited for research, design evaluation, and mission planning where accurate prediction of battery performance is critical.
